Working with Mother Nature

We must acknowledge and understand that Mother Nature does not take orders, only requests. We cannot force, hurry, go against, dismiss or believe we know better than the miraculous machine that is the human body. Everyone is different and although 2 people may share a common set of symptoms, diagnosis or state of health the road to recovery for each may vary in time and outcome, we must understand that everyone is an individual and will respond differently to interventions, while on the way to the same health goal.

The Naturopathic Approach to Healing

Solely taking medications whether they be pharmaceuticals (drugs) or nutraceuticals (natural substances) or both may only lead to short term symptom management at best and at worst may allow the conditions for further, more chronic conditions to develop in the future. Creating a long-term strategy aimed towards the resolution and prevention of health issues will require your engagement and dedication towards actively following recommended shifts in your diet, lifestyle and environment as well as a personalised supplementation plan.
To truly heal from health conditions we must identify as many factors as possible that may have lead to ill health and ask the questions “What may be blocking the bodies natural ability to heal and recover from this issue? How can I remove those blocks, and support the body?”. On this journey you are not a passenger but in the drivers seat.

Alternative vs Conventional Medicine

The use of natural medicine by Naturopathic practitioners is commonly referred to as an ‘Alternative’ medical practice. This suggests that Naturopathy can not be used for primary health care, and can only be used as an alternative to conventional (pharmaceutical) medical care. It also suggests that Naturopathy may be less effective, inferior or lack scientific evidence in some way. This is simply not true.

In fact Naturopathy can be and is used safely, effectively and long term for almost all health conditions. Naturopathy can also be used to compliment conventional medical practices as well. For example, if you have high blood cholesterol your doctor may prescribe you a cholesterol lowering drug which could be life saving, however you may also be told that you may need to stay on that drug for life, which of course is not ideal.

Naturopathy would not dispute the fact that you have high cholesterol, only the idea that the only option for you is to stay on the cholesterol lowering drug long term and that you have limited or no power to manage this health condition any other way. In this situation a combined approach with both your Naturopath and doctor is beneficial. Where you adhere to both Naturopathic interventions as well as conventional medicine while having your cholesterol levels retested periodically and the cholesterol lowering drug dosage modified as needed. This is a much better long term approach to managing health conditions.

The 6 fundamental principles of Naturopathic medicine are:

1- The Healing Power of Nature – Trust in the body’s inherent wisdom to heal itself.
2- Identify and Treat the Causes – Look beyond the symptoms to the underlying cause.
3- First Do No Harm – Utilise the most natural, least invasive and least toxic therapies.
4- Doctor as Teacher – Educate patients in the steps to achieving and maintaining health.
5- Treat the Whole Person – View the body as an integrated whole in all its physical and spiritual dimensions.
6- Prevention – Focus on overall health, wellness and disease prevention.
